This project was created as a physical piece for my university dissertation titled
"Visual Fidelity : Is it a Boon or a Bane?"
In my dissertation, I explored the impact of visual fidelity on player experience and performance in video games. I delved into concepts like realism, immersion, aesthetic contemplation, and cognitive load to understand how these factors influence gameplay. To complement my research, I created a game called FidWarp. This first-person exploration game features a visually stunning environment made using assets with high-quality graphics and immersive lighting. However, I intentionally introduced elements of visual clutter and incoherence to disrupt the player's experience and assess the effects. Once the player collects all gems and goes through the portal, the same environment is present, but at a much lower fidelity. Through my research and game design, I discovered that while high visual fidelity can enhance immersion and aesthetic appreciation, it can also increase cognitive load and potentially hinder player performance. Striking the right balance between visual fidelity and gameplay is essential for creating enjoyable and engaging gaming experiences.
